Description: In 1997, the Florida Legislature established requirements for the State of Florida’s five water management districts to conduct district-wide water supply assessments and, where appropriate, to subsequently develop regional water supply plans (RWSPs). Specifically, water management districts were required to delineate one or more water supply planning regions within their respective jurisdictions and to conduct a water supply assessment to examine, by region, future water supply demands for a 20-year planning horizon and the ability of existing and reasonably anticipated sources to meet the projected demands. If the Governing Board determines that a RWSP is needed for a particular region, it shall be prepared pursuant to Chapter 97-160, Laws of Florida, and 373.036, Florida Statutes (F.S.). RWSPs are prepared to analyze and present various alternatives for meeting the anticipated future water needs (section 373.709(1), F.S.).The Northwest Florida Water Management District (District) completed its first Water Supply Assessment (WSA) in 1998 (Ryan et al. 1998). At that time, the District delineated seven water supply planning regions (Figure 1.1). The primary factors considered in delineation of the regions were county boundaries and the similarity of water supply conditions. County boundaries were used because population data needed for estimating and projecting water use is typically available at the county level. The seven water supply planning regions are:I Escambia CountyII Okaloosa, Santa Rosa, and Walton countiesIII Bay CountyIV Calhoun, Holmes, Jackson, Liberty, and Washington countiesV Franklin and Gulf countiesVI Gadsden CountyVII Jefferson, Leon, and Wakulla countiesThe field "RWSP" indicates if a RSWP is required per the latest WSA. Only Regions II and III are currently subject to RWSPs.
